UI · UX · Brand · Web

I spent a little over 16 months at Almanac ↗, helping redesign and refine the UI/UX as we iterated toward finding product market fit.

The first half of my time there was split between product and brand, on the Growth side and working with the Marketing team. As the first brand design lead, I also championed connecting brand and product together.

In the latter half of my tenure, I moved to the Editor team and focused on improvements to the document editing experience.

Our process

As a small internal team, we experimented with approaches on how we could collaborate better. Overall, it involved iterating on 1–2 features for roughly 2-3 week sprints with almost daily async + sync design reviews. The fast-paced workflow allowed us to nitpick important areas and make sure everyone was aligned on goals, and design direction.

The standard process involved two main phases:

Research + Define

• Kickoff PRD/pitch review, with our PM and lead developer • Benchmark and test hypothesis against comparable products • Review user flows, wireframes, and testing with current users

Design + Handoff

• Apply our design system, test and iterate on layouts and flows, with regular team reviews (rinse/repeat until ready) • Build a clean Figma file with designs, flows, notes, states, acceptance criteria, prototypes, components, etc.

THE WORK

THE WORK

Editor Updates

As we modified our product strategy, we iterated on making our Editor simpler. Our goal was to find a balance between access to lots of features and getting out of the way so users could complete their workflows. That meant fixing little things, from node selections to adjusting the order and hierarchy of buttons and icons. These are some of the editor improvements I contributed to alongside our Lead Designer.

Editor - New Features

Working on the Editor team meant balancing improvements to existing features, and adding new features to improve how our users get work done.

These are a few of the features that I worked on — some made it into production, some didn’t.

Company Rebrand

While undergoing a considerable overhaul of the product UI in early 2022, our leadership felt the need to redesign the company’s brand identity and marketing website. The goal was to signal a big change to the product when we relaunched and marketed the updated features. We had support from a design partner, Logic & Rhythm ↗, who first established the look and feel via a homepage design.

  • Guided logo redesign discussions that explored an evolution of the symbol, and wordmark

  • Extrapolated the initial homepage website, into a full multi-page marketing website

  • Defined a brand guide to systemize our visual updates

  • Supported the development of marketing ads being tested on social channels

Paywall Flow

Collaborated with the Growth team to define entry points and triggers for when users reach their plan limit or want to gain access to product features. Our challenge was defining how to alert the user with the least amount of friction.

  • Designing user flows for entry and alerts, and for upgrades or downgrades

  • Designing UI/UX for alerts, billing screens, and payment flows

  • Designing UI updates and responsive layouts

  • Updating marketing website with Pricing Plans

Inbox notifications

I initially collaborated with the design team during a design retreat to work through designs. Our main challenge was to redesign the Inbox ↗ interface so that it was easy to scan and provided important information for users to address their notifications quickly. In addition, we made it easier for users to dismiss or address notifications directly from Inbox without having to switch contexts.

  • Revised visual hierarchy of content

  • Redesigned UI/UX for navigating inbox items, and how to respond to each message type

  • Explored redesign of iconography to visually identify important notifications

  • Addressed responsive behaviors for mobile UI/UX

Registration Flow

Collaborated with the Growth team to redesign and iterate on their self-serve registration flow, addressing both web and mobile experiences. Our challenge was to capture insightful data from users while keeping the flow simple.

  • Email, Google Auth, and SSO/SAML flows

  • Capturing user data during the reg flow

  • Exploring doc imports, user invitation, and connecting calendar

  • Supported A/B tests of white-glove and self-serve funnel
